Ganga Aarti

Ganga Aarti in Rishikesh: timings and tips

Every evening, riverside ghats in Rishikesh hold the Ganga Aarti, a prayer ceremony with lamps, chanting and music offered to the river.

When does it start?

The Aarti begins around sunset, so the time shifts with the season: earlier in winter, later in summer. Plan to arrive 30 to 45 minutes early for a good spot, especially on weekends and festival days.

Where to watch

  • Parmarth Niketan: a large, well-known ceremony with bhajans by the river.
  • Triveni Ghat: a lively ceremony where many locals gather.
  • Smaller ghats nearby hold quieter ceremonies.

Etiquette

  • Dress modestly and remove shoes where asked.
  • Entry is free. Offerings are optional.
  • Keep phone use respectful during the prayers.
